1 This is my fifth year taking art. I never really thought about why I wanted to take it or what I would learn from it. In the beginning, it was just a class to fill my elective slot, but then I realized what art meant to me. Every day in middle and high school I would be so impatient and stressed out during the day, but then I would go to art. I was and still am able to let loose and be a little bit freer. During the years, I learned a lot in art class. I have studied, about literal things, like artists, movements, paintings, sculptures, murals, and more. I have also learned a little bit about shaping my perspective on art. It has taught me to not look at things from one point of view, but to go beyond.
The amount of art history I have learned in the past couple of years is inexplicable. I know so much about some of the most famous paintings in the world. I honestly believe that the dates, names, vocabulary, movements, stories, I have learned about art history is totally worth it. Because of my knowledge about art history my entire view on art is different. I like the feeling of knowing all the information about a Renaissance artwork when I see it on TV. I like the feeling I get when my parents are in complete awe when I tell them about all the information I know about the Statue of David. For me, art history was captivating. I am very happy that I got to learn so much about it.
Coming from a different direction, art has taught me a lot about me. I feel as if in the past two years I have really come alive in art class. My view on art has taken an extreme turn, and because of that I think I take art seriously. Art has taught me to look at things from multiple perspectives, use more of that right side of my brain. I think I am more open-minded and my interpretation of a good piece of art has changed as well. Also, art has taught me to use what I have around me to bring out my creativity. I have learned how to bring my creativity out more easily. It isn’t that difficult anymore. Ken Robinson said, ““My contention is that creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.” This taught me the importance of creativity. I am really happy I got to hear some of his lectures. I have learned that I honestly can say that art has changed me in many ways, and I have definitely become a better artist.
